Symbolism & Imagery

The King of Cups sits enthroned upon the open sea. His throne rests upon a stone platform in the water, the sea extending in all directions around him, its surface rolling with steady swells rather than violence. Yet he does not grip his seat or brace against the motion. He sits as if the throne itself were anchored to something beneath the surface, some stability invisible to the eye but certain in its presence.

In his right hand he holds a great cup, ornate and golden, the vessel of his suit. The cup sits steady in his grasp, its precious metal catching the light. In his left, a short sceptre, the symbol of authority he need not raise. His robes fall heavy around him, layered in golds and blues, the colors of fire and water meeting without conflict. A fish hangs from a chain at his neck, marking kinship with the element that surrounds him. A crown rests easily on his head. His gaze moves outward across the water, calm and watchful, the look of one who has learned what lives in the deep and no longer fears it.

Behind him, on one side, a ship moves across the waves, sails full, carrying unknown cargo toward unknown shores. On the other side, a dolphin leaps from the water, breaking the surface in a moment of play before returning to the depths. The King of Cups sits between these two: the vessel that navigates by intention and the creature that moves by instinct. His throne floats where they meet.
